There needs to be diligent legislation enacted to control public adjusters. How can someone without any professional license charge someone a hefty fee to represent them on matters of personal finance, isn’t that why we have personal attorneys? As a state contractor I am appalled by the gall of some of these firms and seeing the stiff regulation of my industry, I shake my head how public adjusters can fly under the radar duping hundreds of thousands of dollars basically from all of our pockets while I get constantly bombarded with strict legislation to simply replace someone’s front door.

    Glenn:

I don’t know what state you’re from but here in Florida there are strict licensing laws and rules that PAs must follow.

I’m sure if you had a fire at your house you’d want everything you were entitled to or would you just accept the insurance companys’ first lowball offer for the good of society?

In most cases I would instruct an insured to let their company handle their claim and give the company the opportunity to settle it the correct way. Most often this happens. The PA would be the last alternative. It’s likely that Citizens will not be the issue if Florida is pounded by storms in the future. It will be the large number of new, inexperienced, “not really in the insurance business”, Florida based carriers that have poped-up since Wilma. Then a PA may be the only alternative.

That’s not bad advice SWFL Mark! Unless it’s a complicated large loss I’d agree with you.

I also agree that inexperienced adjusters..both PAs & company adjusters… coming in after a storm will be the problem, just like they were in the past. That’s the real problem but new laws coming in will somewhat curtail inept PAs, I’m not sure about company or IAs.

Can you tell me when the law took or takes effect regarding not being able to sue Citizens? As of now Citizens is being sued every day.

I agree that the storm trooper adjusters Citizens hired were for the most part inept, causing many insureds terrible problems. Also, most of the claims being reopened (supplemented) are Citizens, because of that, hence the task force.
