I hope you didn’t miss the 6/19/07 article in IJ that State Farm has cut its rates 9 times in CO since we repealed no-fault. The most recent cut was 7.2% and will save CO consumers $38MM annually. This cut brings the total reduction to 40% since the repeal on 7/1/03. This means that auto insurance has become much more affordable and more people can afford to buy the mandatory coverage. Sadly, no-fault created more litigation not less due to its mandate and complexity. Now, more money pays claims and less is wasted on administrative expense. Yes the health providers squawked long and hard, but the important ones are all doing very well. We will be shipping a few “surplus” chiros to FL.
PIP should be eliminated as it is rife with fraud-almost every PIP claim has some measure of fraud involved, particularly if the “injured” person has an attorney. For the most part, all PIP does is finance fraudulent bodily injury claims and drives up everyone’s insurance premiums by at least 30% or more. I’m a claims adjuster with more than 25 yrs experience and PIP should be terminated so that some fraud can be eliminated from the process.
We need to keep PIP insurance. If we lose PIP then Big Insurance will have a huge competitive advantage over smaller insurance companies. The loss of PIP will cause some smaller insurance companies and their agents to go out of business. I blame Ellyn Bogdanoff for her broken promises to protect us. She is working hard for State Farm.
We need to save pip. It is $16 per month and provides great benefits to the insureds such as medical expenses, lost wages, transportation to the doctors, and funeral expeneses without regard to fault. There is no evidence of rampant fraud. The push to get rid of pip is being made by Big Insurance. They will make millions more in profits if victims cannot get treatment.
Florida PIP, no-fault, rescue only temporary until 2007
June 19, 2006
The insurance industry was on pins-and-needles in early May when the Florida Legislature passed SB 2114 and extended when the state’s no-fault auto insurance law would sunset–but then the bill went onto the desk of Gov. Jeb Bush, who came to the rescue and vetoed the bill.
Everyone was afraid the governor, now in the final months of his final term, wouldn’t do anything to rock the Legislature’s boat. It was amazing to see the governor take such a positive stand about such a controversial issue. SB 2114 had major support, passing the Senate 38 to 0, and the House on an 118 to 1 vote. The governor’s veto, therefore, was a gutsy decision, and one that must have given him a few sleepless nights, as he realized his decision upset a lot of senators and representatives.

Comment:
The current PIP and the way it severely penalises tourists from overseas to Florida is a disgrace
Florida depends on tourism from overseas
The senate and its associates must look at the appalling mess an accident leaves any visitor hiring a car in Florida who is then on the receiving end of an accident
Travel Insurance does not cover the medical bills when you return to your home country
Workers Comp does not exist outside USA
Med pay does not exist outside the USA
Defered payment for medical bills also does not exist outside the USA
I know because 9 months down the line after a Florida driver lost control and on the wrong side of the road smashed into my families vehicle ……$30,000 in medical bills and counting and a disabling condition for life and the at fault drivers Insurer does nothing to help
The at fault driver was cited for careless driving a mere $113 fine in Florida but a prison term in the UK
PIP and Floridas No Fault Law does nothing whatever to assist those innocently injured who have no possible way of taking out additional cover when renting a car
