S.C. Measure Would Require Locks on Cars of Drunk Drivers

    In response to the comment that the interlock will disable the car while driving I just want to deliver the facts.

    If the driver blows a high alcohol breath sample after having already started the car the interlock will just store the violation.

    The ignition interlock will never shut a vehicle off while the engine is on – instead the interlock will lock prevent starting the car the next time the driver needs to start it until the violation is downloaded and reported to the state agency.

    As a safety precaution, even if a car stalls, the driver has two minutes to restart the engine without blowing a breath sample.

    It is a shame there is so much misinformation about the device. These things save lives – and that\’s the bottom line.
