John is right that the solution (mathematically, at least) is reasonably easy. It\’s just that he has the wrong one.

Early in this year\’s legislative session, there were two very good proposals that would have begun to return sanity to the process. Now, we\’ve slid that much further into the void, and it will take two or three years to dig out, assuming we can summon the political courage to get the right things done.

Insurers are not charitable causes. They want to make money. When they do, they pay their profits out as dividends, not just pocket them for the coming storm. When they don\’t make money for a while, they fold their cards. Most carriers have turned their cards face down on the table. If we keep this up, they\’ll all be leaving the casino for good.

I know that the term \”crisis\” is overused these days, but we\’re in real trouble down here.

I agree with you about a state run disaster policy and then use the insurance co for fire theft and vandilizm. I also would add legilize gambling and use the tax on this to go to this state run fund.. This fund will never be touched unless it is a major disaster. Get some honest people to run it. To hell with all these insurance companies!!!!!!

That\’s right why don\’t you have tourists subsidize residents in Florida. They don\’t live in the region, but they should pay so Floridians can enjoy their beach front property. Why don\’t you go after vacation homeowners? Oh wait you already have. They pay at least 2x the amount of property taxes even though they use fewer services than residents. Why is it that Florida residents feel that they should be subsidized for everything?
    >>>>

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH PUTTING A TAX ON TOURISM FOR HURRICANE COVERAGE.
TOURIST COME TO FLORIDA TO USE OUR STATES RESOURCES.

IN FACT, THE TAX COMMITTEE IS CONSIDERING ELIMINATING THE PROPERTY TAX ALL TOGETHER AND GOING TO AN ALL SALES TAX FORMAT.

I THINK A 9% SALES TAX ON ALL SERVICES + GOODS WOULD BE ENOUGH TO ELIMINATE THE PROPERTY TAX.

WHY SHOULD ONLY PROPERTY OWNERS PAY FOR ALL THE STATE & LOCAL SERVICES?

I agree with you about the sales tax and the tourists but what do you think of casino gambling in florida? The number of people here are eith going to missip or the hard rock casino in tampa or on the suncoast boat. There goes all the tax out of this state? What is your stand???? Ken

I like allowing legalized gambling in FL.
I even suggested it here under > JGJ2010 a while ago.

    >some facts
Seminole Hardrock Casino & their sister hotel near Miami collects all the profits & pays zero in taxes. (oh by the way, those are not slots, they are bingo machines w/ terrible odds)

Nevada generates nearly $800 million on around 6% gaming tax rate.

Florida at a 40% rate could generate nearly billions annually imo.

Look how Lousiana have gained $\’s from their gaming revenues and jobs.

Plus it would create mega investment & jobs.

We could eliminate property tax all together for families by adding a sales tax to services (approx. 8-9% sales tax or services & goods).

    Update:
The tax committee is starting to listen to their constituents. They are considering a 13% tax on goods instead of a property tax. I prefer 9% on goods & services.

glad to see you agree on the gambling thing. I agree with you on a 9% tax. If some of these things are not done this state is going to be a mess in the future. These representatives need to get going on this problem and be quick. Thanks Ken
