Some people DO happen to be insured and still get their plate taken. Been there. Happened to me recently. And like all things governmental, it took too long to clear up. This law is ridiculous. I understand the need to stop uninsured drivers, I do. The only serious sccident that I had been in in my past was with a uninsured driver. Not only was she uninsured, she had just had her licence taken away for DUI. She was driving in excess of 80 mph in a residential area. I was turning out of my driveway when, BAM! She hit me. I got a ticket for unsafe movement (failure to see before turning into roadway that such movement could be made safely) and I had to listen to the higway patrolman tell me how it was MY fault. She had no insurance, no licence. He should have had a handful of tickets for HER. Not to mention, she should have been taken away in HANDCUFFS. I always carry insurance. ALWAYS. I never drunk or impaired in any capacity. NEVER. So I understand the need to protect people from uninsured drivers. But if the DMV makes a mistake, then someone who is a good, law-abiding driver can get royally screwed. Regardless of the fact that I had PROOF of insurance, the law \”Tagged\” my plate, and I was stuck with a cop saying, \”Sorry. There\’s nothing I can do.\”
