first of all, they were hired by BP, and then laid off because of no new work available, but if BP were smart, they could have used them as part of the cleanup crew at their current wages. but if laid off, then like any other company they don’t get full salaries. problem this senator is having, is that now this is taxing state for unemployment benefits, but BP helps pay for that out of their paychecks. i think this senator is looking for votes!
Just thought I would clarify for you that Melancon is in the fight of his life this coming election cycle. He’s trying his best to appease his constituents.
If you want to skip reading what he said, I’ll give you the CliffsNotes:
Sure, let’s pay these people for doing NOTHING, including not blowing the whistle on what some of them knew to be unsafe practices. They worked for greed….and now have a problem. Many industries are prone to cutting costs and having consequential losses. It’s called a “risk of doing business”. LA in particualar thinks the world owes it a livehlihood everytime something happens. LA contributes NOTHING to the national economy, and sucks federal resources every time a storm comes up the gulf. LA is ground zero for hurricanes and always will be. Close the state and make it a national park. We’ll save money and aggravation.
Where does it state in the article that Congressman Melancon was asking for full wages for BP employees? The article well states that it is the laid off workers from the 33 rigs that are affected by the moratorium. These people would rather be working than receiving unemployment. The people that comment should learn to comprehend what they read before they voice their opinions.

U.S. Congressman Charlie Melancon (LA-03)?
That should be U.S. Congressman Charlie Melancon (D). Why try to hide the party affiliation? The whole article avoids mention of his party.
The moratorium is Odumbo’s doing, not BP’s. If a plane crashes do we suspend all flights for six months?
Odumbo’s goal is obvious: ruin the US economy, and weaken us abroad. He’s advancing on both fronts with alacrity.
