Why is the federal government wasting the hard earned taxpayer dollars on this SuckHole of a state? It will NEVER be safe from hurricanes. It has no significant role in the national economy. It’s residents are primarily indigent. And we’re spending $1,000,000,000 for a pump? Added to what was already spent on this losing proposition and the cost is unconscionable. This is pure pork to satisfy some crooked politicians from Louisiana. Other than the 2009 New Orleans Saints, I challenge anyone to identify one positive, significant thing to come out of this swamp.

Azekiel, you show your true ignorance. New Orleans is the second largest port in the United Sates and half of the country’s oil & natral gas come thorugh South Louisiana.

Your ignorance surprises even someone as humble as me.

    I assume you’re from Arkansas.

The benefits of Lousiana are much deeper than the goods provided through the ports. The people, regardless of your thoughts of them, is Loisiana’s, and the world’s, key asset. Something more valuable than a few dollars.

That said, Renee, your input is sad at best. Hope you are not from Louisiana. Bush made the mistake of listening to Louisiana Governor and New Orleans Mayor and not send support early. When we really peal off the issues, Clinton was advised by Tulane University that the levies would break and did nothing. Could have been in the middle of Monica issues at the time (literally)…

While the port and oil transfer issues have merit, that doesn’t justify spending billions on vain attempts to save a decrepit city that someone was dumb enough to build below sea level. Setting aside your two valid issues, what does LA contribute to the economy? NOTHING. While you may take exception to some of Azekiels comments, many of them are accurate. None of the Forbes 500 companies have their corporate offices there. There is no talent pool. Businesses are afraid to invest there because of the annual risk of storms and damage. The French Quater has deteriorated and the tourist industry has all but dried up. What’s there to do in New Orleans that can’t be done elsewhere? Fish? It would be nice to know just how much tax revenue LA contributes to the government on which it relies for just about everything.

Maybe they should move to DC. Nothing get contributed to the economy from there either.

well, if you think about it, why did we give money to AIG! that was a stupid idea. but for those folks who keep blaming a president – forget it! because spending has to be approved by CONGRESS as well. LA should have prepared for the this anyways, problem is the local folks did not realize how bad it could have been and then it came. Look at FL, who is trying to get a hurrican catastrophe fund up and running to cover losses w/in the state. problem we deal with as a catastrophe hits, we as a society are always looking for a handout to help recover the loss. everytime we turn around the feds are helping folks.

The “local folks” are just that. They don’t generate enough income or tax revenue to do much of anything. The world got a glimpse of the “local folks” during news coverage of Katrina. Remember the footage of the mobs at the Superdome? Remember the corruption of the cops who looted stores then abandoned their duties? This is a city who’s time has passed. Put a fork in it! Taxpayer dollars (from all across the country) get thrown at this cesspool with regularity to help it recover from natural disasters. Why do we keep wasting precious resources to attempt the impossible: keep a decaying city that was built below sea level from the perils of nature. It’s like the Dutch kid with his finger in the dike. Cut the losses. Put a pipline from the gulf inland. There goes any argument to keep the city.

Significant cities built below sea level:
    Amsterdam
    Charleston SC
    Venice
    Long Beach, CA
    Israel’s West Bank

I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin’.
