Apparently I misunderstood the broadcast lastnite on Fox News. It has been reported that they WERE NOT in the nursing home with their families. They took their kids and grandkids and left. A survivor stated that the only one evacuated were the ones that could walk out. And you are correct when you say that a jury should make the decision regarding their fate. I just feel PERSONALLY that they should have done more.

Amanda, the LA Attorney General agrees with you and has charged the owners with negligent homicide-hopefully it’ll be 34 counts. The likely outcome is that they’ll reach a plea agreement and will serve no time, but they’ll certainly lose their license to operate a nursing home. Tragically, a jury will never be given an opportunity to hear the facts.

No dice. As owners of the nursing home and having taken payment to CARE for the residents, that means they are responsible for their care and what happens to them 24/7. That includes a plan for a disaster and when you have advance notice of the disaster as they did, you take the steps necessary in advance to take care of the people you are responsible for/in your care. There is no lynch mob mentality about that. What if it had been a day care center? Would you ask how many children they could carry while swimming as a poor excuse for an excuse? One would certainly hope not because one would assume the parents took the responsibility to get their children out of there and if they were not able to (if it had been a fire for example), the owners would still have the responsibility to get them out of dangers way and take care of them. Many if not all residents of the nursing home were as defenseless as babies and their CARETAKERS did NOT do the job they were continually being paid to do and were thus responsibile for. Even if they had not been paid for their care, they had the moral responsbility as a fellow human being.

The nursing home owners should be held responsible for the deaths of those in their care. Mayor Nagin should likewise be held responsible for the many deaths of those who were not provided evacuation transportation before the flooding because he was specificly charged with the responsibility for providing transportation by all available means in the New Orleans Hurricane Emergency Plan.
