Majority of U.S. Mining Deaths in Coal Mines

    The headline is correct for 2010 only, where it is skewed by the Upper Big Branch disaster. In recently years however, coal mining has had a declining percentage of overall deaths, and has not been the ‘majority’ for some time.

    All mining deaths are by nature tragic and every effort must be made to prevent them all. But most coal mining companies, and MSHA, have been prioritising the issue for some time, and those efforts should not be lost amidst misleading headlines.

    You think the majority of mining deaths were at/in coal mines because there are more of them than any other kind of mines in the country?
