I am as guilty of the next person of talknig, texting, gps-ing… I agree with banning distracted driving (which I believe is a ticketable in all states – just rarely used). I think a return to parenting would be helpful. Driving is still a privilege and not a right. I also feel that handsfree technology is just as dangerous. Whether my hand is to my face or not, doesn’t change my level of distraction. Setting up the handsfree is an increase (at least for me). Our society has to find it unacceptable to act in such a way before anything will change. As a society, we expect that you should answer your cell phone and respond to texts and emails right away. Unless as a whole, society will start to accept “sorry I was driving” as a reason not to immediately recieve a response, nothing will change.
We’re looking at the wrong focus for technology change (the phone). We’re not going to be able to control the use of phones in cars or other distracting technology – radio, TV’s, game players, GPS, etc. The technology that we need is collision avoidance software built into the car that will alert the driver that they are straying from their lane or climbing onto the bumper of the car ahead or going faster than the posted speed. You know, 21st Century stuff…
I don’t know if anyone ever assumed the reason we don’t see a decrease in texting and driving is that the up and coming youth, that are now starting to drive, are the ones that are so addicted to the new technology they can’t put it down. When this all first started to happen texting wasn’t very prevalent, but now we see an ever increasing growth in youth using cell phones. There’s a reason it’s the leading death in teens, I believe that it will be incredibly difficult to see a decrease in texting while driving, given the ever increasing popularity of it.
