Saw this scam at my local gas station. Guy approached me from Coast to Coast glass offering a free wind shield if I had a scratch in my existing one. He told me the insurance company pays for it. Once I told him I worked for an insurance company he turned red and walked the other way.

This new economy brings out the scammers.

I’ve been at gas stations with glass companies offering repairs and replacement on the spot at no cost to the insured. It’s a sick and twisted practice that rivals public adjusters going door to door looking for cracks in driveways.

Guess it’s very easy to put your e-mail in the subject line…can’t wait to see what kind of spam I get from that one!

I’ve almost done that several times. At least your email address doesn’t use your full name including middle initial like mine does.

Be thankful you didn’t do this in the health reform article at the top of the IJ homepage.

Well, the article just makes you so mad you can’t see straight!

There is no doubt that this bad economy has brought out the worst in people from an insurance perspective. Insurance rates, at least in Fla, have not decreased like other items (real estate, flat acreen TV’s, etc), and the public just doesn’t understand it. Some people are looking for every angle to get their share of their insurance premium back. One way or another.

There is a Chevron gas station right around the corner from where I work. I go there for car washes sometimes during my lunch break, or to grab a snack, etc. I swear every single time I go, they have these blonde chicks wearing tiny shorts, or these “buff” guys in casual/business dress sidling & slinking around, stating, “oh hey, do you have a crack in your windshield? You do? Well then it’s your lucky day! If you just pay us $50, we’ll take care of everything with your insurance company! You won’t have to pay anything more than that! If for any reason you do, we’ll refund you your $50, and give you a credit towards your next chipped windshield claim”. Can you imagine the looks on these scammers faces when I told them what Florida law is regarding damaged windshields? IF it’s a legit claim, and IF the insured is carrying proper insurance, THEY DON’T PAY SQUAT for front windshield replacements. Obviously, they have to have the right coverage, but most people who have insurance down here (scary 80% do NOT!!!) have the appropriate coverage. I cannot imagine how much money this atrocious company has raked in, scamming these people, and taking advantage of their trust. PATHETIC. Oh, and to anyone who asks; you better believe I’ve reported these punks! Who knows what good it will do, but they have definitely been reported. Got their flyer, their business card, and their branch managers name (if it’s real!), and will be reporting it again to the news. :)
