reaction times on big rigs are long and to correct a vehicle, is not fast… any fast correct can easily result in an accident… i used to be a otr-long haul driver trainer many years ago… we don’t need to be texting, besides 10-4 good buddy, we can chat w/others and still maintain site fo the road and vehicles we travel with… as a professional driver we should have been doing this w/o the need for a rule…

You’re right…we shouldn’t need to waste money putting laws like this on the books. For the most part, people driving the big rigs are professional and already adhere to this new law. My bigger issue is for those who have ignored the dangers and will continue to…here’s one more law that won’t be enforced. My boyfriend drives also used to be a trainer and is now OTR, and it’s ridiculous how many “4-wheelers” have cell phones held up to their ears speeding down the road 10-15 miles over the posted limit.

Once again government in action slowing down evolution…
OTR drivers aren’t the issue. It’s drivers in cars who think they can cut in front of a rig and slam on their brakes, cut people off and generally think they own the road. Goverment totaly missed the boat on this one. Hooray for our senators and congressman/women who are out for themselves!!!

you know who you should be bashing before you bash anyone… this is a DOT regulation, not a law passed by congress… so… it has nothing to do with congress…

This law is a waste of time. The OTR drivers that drive and text will continue. Who can catch them? Its not as though the cops can see in the cab. If fined after an accident, then its too late.
There is no doubt that texting and driving is dangerous. The law should be applied to areas of greater opportunity for enforcement prior to an accident, like when driving cars. Specifically teens are a huge problem. I know several, daughter’s friends that she’s not allowed to ride with, that seem to think driving and texting is a thrill ride…

It still comes back to the fact that most, if not all, states have “DISTRACTED DRIVING” laws on the books. If the cops would enforce those laws, there would be no need for new laws. This also goes for eating while driving, putting on make up, reading (I haven’t, but I’ve seen it done), etc.

ur correct in that not all states, this makes it uniform for all cdl drivers… but in many cases, most of us are professional and keep our eyes on the road correctly… but it only takes a few bad apples to have laws put in place… think about the reason why we have log books, and even those are not followed correctly…
