This is a case of simple property rights, though Viacom is trying to sue to wrong party. I recall an article about this several months ago and one of the reasons Viacom is suing YouTube is because while YouTube is very good about removing offending material in a timely manner once notified Viacom feels that YouTube should be the ones policing for copyright violations. The gist is Viacom wants YouTube to spend the money to protect Viacom’s interests instead of Viacom protecting their own interests. Viacom needs to protect their own copyrights instead of trying to force others to protect them.

And for the person that wondered about the difference between YouTube and Blockbuster – Blockbuster licenses the material they rent to you. Every time you rent a movie everyone gets a piece. On YouTube the only party getting a piece of the action is YouTube.

If there’s ever a case where Viacom needs to lose…

May be time for our society to look at material on the internet differently – modify the copyright law to address internet capabilities.

When Xerox came up with the copy machine people were concerned.

When Edison came up with a practical phonograph people were concerned.

When Ampex came up with the first practical video recorder people were concerned.
