It’s not in the article, but I wonder if it is in the study itself, the age range of bosses that are reported to be the most “abusive;” and if one age range has more “abusive bosses” than any other. By the same token, I wonder what the age range is of those reporting being and feeling abused.

It’s perception! I’m mid-career and I started my career with the “old school” bosses that expected you to do your job, and if you didn’t, you heard about it (usually in the correct way).

Today, we rear kids so that we don’t “hurt their feelings and give them low self esteem.” Don’t tell them anything is wrong – that might hurt their fragile ids.

My bet is this, bosses are becoming the victims of delicate egos. If and when I messed up growing up and at work, I expected to be called to the carpet.

Now you gotta tell kids (which is defined as anybody 5 years or greater younger than me) that everything is ok, you did fine…. But that ain’t reality – some times, things aren’t ok and fine and you deserve a good dressing down.

Reports are, it’s far easier to get “A’s” in school now becuase the school doesn’t want to hurt the kid’s feelings. In my day (boy that makes me sound old) we kept score and you had to win to get a trophy.

This is my opinion only and you are free to disagree (it’s ok, kid, you’re entitled to your opinion): the real world is hard and we better learn to operate in it or America is in trouble.

Amazing…just amazing….blame the Republicans for all the problems in the world…give me a break.

I’ve seen both sides of the fence – bosses that are abusive – i.e. verbally abusive comments towards employees, both in private and in public, sometimes physically abusive, and abuse HR policies. I’ve also worked with employees that are just plain slackers. But, because they’re in a “protected group”, they don’t get fired.

I’ve worked for an abusive boss – one that specifically targeted a number of employees, including me – to get them fired. It wasn’t until he “layed off” four people of the same ethic background, and then hired new people for the same positions, that the EEOC stepped in. He was summarily fired.

As to trial liars…I mean lawyers, the group as a whole abuses the insurance system to no end. They don’t have their client’s best interest in mind, only what makes them money. The reason that the GOP doesn’t like trial lawyers is because of this abuse of the legal system.

CJB, I have to agree with you man. There are different perceptions now than 20, heck even 10, years ago. It is easier to get A’s in school because we don’t want to damage the student ego or harm their chances at getting into a good college. We don’t want to formally discipline employees because that might hurt their career. We’ve lost sight of the fact that proper discipline does nothing but help people learn. We grow from discipline.

Johnny, I’m assuming you’ve had some bad experiences with HR. I think most of us have. I’ve also had good experiences with HR. It all depends on the corporate culture and the people staffing that department. The same with the government. If you work with an honest and driven employee from the gov’t you get far – if not you get nowhere.

The gist I get from the study is the Golden Rule. That’s always seemed to work with me on all levels – as supervisor, employee, peer, mentor, family member. That’s what I take from it.

Wow, what a bunch of whiners! The last boss that treated me bad now sees me as his steapest competition. The one before that, I set-up and he left in tears. Fired. Ovaries of steel gentlemen! Go out & Get a Set. Before you whine too loud try being a boss, getting rid of slacking employees takes an act of God! It costs us all! What does the republicans have to do w/this?

Abuse is a potentially vague term, I think and everyone has their own definition of it. Just depends.

There’s tremendous variety in types of employees and bosses. To attempt to label them all with only “good” or “bad” is too narrow minded.

Just for fun, if any of you have NOT seen the movie “Office Space”, you must! It’s cube-life from the pee-on POV. =)
