I appreciate your comment. When possible I do try to get out of the way. Most times that\’s not as easy as it sounds.

Here\’s my favorite stupid trucker tailgater story:

Summer 2005, driving from the midwest back to Charlotte NC. On I75 south of Lexington & I\’m in the middle lane. Heavy traffic in the middle of the day going over the speed limit.

Big rig with empty flatbed gets to within 15 feet (no exaggeration there) of my minivans bumper and turns on his jake brake. My wife and kids scream. So loud that it sounds like gunfire right behind us.

Right lane is filled with campers going slow, can\’t go there. Left lane is full as well.

Was at least 5 miles of this – could not change lanes, this idiot is breathing on us and also trying to change lanes. Slowing down is not an option unless I want to taste metal. Eventually I moved to left lane and he zoomed ahead, weaving through lanes at breakneck speed.

No name trucking company from WI, could not find them in yellow pages or any database I know of.

Again, I appreciate your comment and mean no disrespect to you but I\’m real tired of this situation. So many of these drivers threaten others with their trucks and I don\’t see it getting better.

FYI I drive a lot – 25K a year or so, most of it on interstates. We love road trips.

Come on, trucking industry folks, what do you say? Can anything be done? Risk managers have any ideas?

Well, you actually said it in your earlier response. Wal-Mart, for one, doesn\’t tolerate sloppy driving. They also pay well, better than many anyway. Wages for good drivers have been going up the last few years. We aren\’t there yet, but as the wages go up it will be easier to attract quality to the driver ranks.
There are still some companies which think they can get by with cheap, but they are thinning out.
