My mom taught me to stop and look at a situation and figure out if what I was about to do was a good idea. She also told me if it wasn’t a good idea and I did it anyway, whatever resulted was my fault.

Rather than post flags, why not just post a park & rec official every 100′ surrounding the lake so they can do what intelligent people are supposed to do for themselves?

The end-of-article comment by Ms. Winzer, Dir.of Public Recreation– Port Huron, seems almost comical to me. That the routine monitoring of hourly wind velocities at a given location along a waterfront and the routine display of a color-coded (indicator) flag to alert beach patrons of “iffy” or dangerous conditions would somehow require the hiring of an additional staff person…”just to be in charge of watching the beach” suggests to me either a lazy or uncaring attitude toward public safety.

Speaking as somebody who has been an American Red Cross certified lifeguard for the past 40 years…implementation of such a simple safe-guard system would fall under the description of daily “house keeping” duties of either one of the lifeguards or swim area “grounds keeper” on staff.

The only signage, if any, that should be posted in my opinion would be “SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK”. Leave the decision to the individual and hold them accountable for their own actions. Michigan doesn’t need to incur more expenses or liabilities.
