While I think it is crap that the widow is suing the county for the accidental death of her husband, I don’t think it is right for the county to “wash their hands” of any responsibility to keep the roads safe for cars, cyclists and pedestrians. With the rising cost of gas, we should be finding ways to make roads safer and encourage bicycling, not discourage it.
Um, you’ve never been to Iowa, have you? We’re talking back-of-beyond county roads here – we’re lucky they’re even faintly paved. These are FARM roads, used by FARM vehicles, and it would be beyond pointless to maintain them as if they were city byways – there are probably only 10 people within a square mile of that crack in the road, if that many. You’re thinking of cities and city conceits, m’dear, not empty farmland. If you farm out in the middle of Crawford County, you get enough exercise without hopping on a bike for a jaunt. Why would anyone want to live in Iowa then? It sounds horrible. Shut it down. Turn the whole state into an ethenol plant.
