Chicago Fire Kills 6 Young Children
    Sunday, September 03, 2006
By MICHAEL TARM, Associated Press Writer

There was a total of Nine Children in the apartment. “The apartment hadn’t had electricity since May, said John Dewey, a spokesman for utility Commonwealth Edison. He declined to say why it was turned off, citing confidentiality reasons.”

There’s more to this story. Search Chicago Fire Kills 6 children. There’s several articles on the web. The youngest child was 3 months old. Yes, it is time to stop having children…9!

John – It only made it to trial b/c they were poor minorities. JP raises the race card, yes, it was in play, in their favor!

Saints Fan – Yes, I would feel the same. Again, you also state “should they be punished.” I don’t understand this way of thinking. You act as if the rigors of life’s demands are some how mankind’s punishment to people who are Catholic and have multiple children, or choose lifesyles that don’t provide a livable wage, whether they can afford them/it or not. I am Italian and Roman Catholic, my wife stays home with our ONE son. Guess what, I work my butt off for her to be able to do that, we live very simply and I would NEVER imperil my family the way these ignorant fools did. You think that God is more happy that they didn’t use birth control even though the kids are now dead? Lastly, it’s hilarious how these people claim Catholocism as a basis to have multiple kids but then they sell drugs, drink and do drugs, gang bang, fornicate, etc… Those things are also against the moral tenets.

The crappy attorney for providing a crappy defense! This should have been a defense verdict and certainly not worth $6 Mil!

Reagan, I must thank you for toning down the vitriol in your later posts. There’s no reason to call people names nor demand they leave THEIR country just because you don’t like the political views you assume they have. And what’s wrong with communism?

About the case – it’s a crock. Too many people in too small a space. Slumlord or not these people have a responsibility to follow their lease and pay their own bills. As was stated before, Chicago gives out free smoke detectors and that program is well advertised. There is also assistance for electricity bills for those that need it.

Makes me wonder how long the money will last. They should be able to retire comfortably with this settlement. What are the odds they’re broke inside of 3 years? Any takers?

Will read all the comments after I post but bascially this fire was started/caused due to the incompetence/ laziness of the family of the dead kids and then they reaped the benefits. Got to love our f’ed up legal system.

You can’t blame the attorney for knowing what a jury can do in Cook County.

There were two families: one with 5 children dead (one surviving) and the other with one deceased child. So, $5M and $1M respectively. I’m not commenting on your opinions but the landlord had a duty to show that there were working smoke detectors in these units. That doesn’t mean that failing that he/she was solely or partially responsible for these deaths. Mostly I’m curious where people with your opinions are when we seat a jury. Cook County jurors seem to think that filing a lawsuit is akin to winning the lottery – and they are not alone. This settlement was rather low given the sympathy this case could have engendered. I suspect policy limits, children with no work history, nothing to suggest they’d be big earners, they weren’t supporting anyone the lore of $1M each factored into it. $5M should significantly change that family’s lives but not many people can handle this kind of money well. Look at all of the lottery winners filing bankruptcy.

Six children died in an apartment fire in Chicago Sept. 3, 2006. Five were siblings from age 3 to 14. The sixth child was being baby-sat. The mother of the family and three other children were hospitalized. The case was not tried it was settled against the building owner and managers on Nov 13 2007.
