That bridge did perfectly well for decades w/o incident. The only variable seems to be the construction that was going on at the time. It could be that nobody bothered to check the weight load limit before parking (and leaving) multiple pieces of heavy equipment on the span.
I remember watching the I-90 floating bridge sink into Lake Washington(Seattle)back in the early ’90’s. Construction taking place on the road surface led to its demise. I won’t get into details but it was clear that the practices of the contractor took the bridge down.

I don’t think a report has been issued yet, has it?? And if not, what design preparations have been made to make sure there is not a reoccurance?
