As a basketball coach I have had 3 seperate incidents over the past 7 years in which a cheerleader was badly hurt and had to be hauled off the floor. Needless to say this does nothing for team moral and I\’m not sure where or when it became necessary to conduct high risk moves in order to create team spirit.

The event is the sport and the cheer team is the supoort unit but that seems to have been forgotten.

What? Did you read the article? They aren\’t covering competitions – where there is a mat and spotters. Kids get hurt in football and basketball every day. There are THREE TIMES the number of emergency room visits for girls basketball than for cheerleading. Is it about the \”sport\” or about kids? Or maybe you just don\’t like cheerleaders getting in the way of your game.

You don\’t have to leave the ground in order to shoot the ball into the hoop, but you allow it.

Please leave your prejudice to yourself. What\’s long overdue is real information about cheerleading injury facts. Cheerleading is as safe (or moreso) than other athletics kids choose to participate in, and if you\’re going to start restricting it, you\’d better take out dunks, tackling, sliding and a host of other athletic skills.

\”The event is the sport and the cheer team is the support unit but that seems to have been forgotten\” – This is the type of attitude that sets us back decades. Next you\’ll say the girls should be in the kitchen barefoot and pregnant too!! Just because there are cheerleaders for your basketball games doesn\’t mean that\’s all they\’re good for. They didn\’t cancel the cheering on the sidelines of sports, they cancelled the competitions. The competitions where these girls don\’t have stupid basketball players to chear on; they\’re cheering for themselves and showing their talents!!

AND for another thing, you can get injured in any sport. If ANYONE gets hurt it brings down the moral. Why don\’t you try getting rid of the cheerleaders from your games and see how moral goes for you?

All comes down to the – no doubt – predominately all male board. I was involved in cheering in college. We practiced as hard as any team member and had far fewer injuries. The only injury I had was at a football game on the SIDELINES. Never in competition as those events are well monitored and controlled. If they ban the cheerleadng competition than they need to ban the football, basketball, and other \”away\’games or open themselves up to a discrimination suit. If I were them I would tell them to put their sideline cheering where the Missouri sun don\’t shine.

If \”Safety was not the primary concern, officials said\”, than what was? Girl\’s & women\’s sports get pathetic little attention as it is,(WNBA,…). There ought to be a better way to resolve their primary concern, whatever that is, without cutting them off at the knees.

I coach a girls HS team and have for 7 years.

I\’m confused as to how my post stating that cheerleaders should not pyramid or do highly hazardous stunts during a girls basketball game makes me a sexist.

I apologize for assuming. But it truly goes without saying anyone could get hurt during a game, no matter what they\’re doing. Heck, people have been killed watching games when they get into fist fights.

Cheerleading is just like playing basketball – if you don\’t push yourself, you won\’t exceed your expectations. Falls happen. They could happen on the court over an untied shoe lace. In the past 7 years, have none of your girls EVER suffered an injury?

    Perhaps the President should intervene.

    Wasn\’t he a cheerleader?

My best wishes to Katrina Harris and her Ritenour Cheerleaders. I am sure they will raise the funds to pay their way to the Nationals. Many years ago I saw a movie which dealt with a cheerleaders funding problem – something to do with the Dallas Cowboys – and I remember the girl driving the fund-raising was called Debbie.
