Connecticut State Police Step Up Tailgating Enforcement

Connecticut state police are stepping up enforcement of laws against tailgating.

Police say troopers are on the lookout for drivers following too closely this month on highways in greater Hartford, New Haven, Meriden, Middletown and Old Saybrook.

State police say a review of accidents in the central Connecticut last year revealed that following too closely was the cause in 40 percent of the cases.

In addition to the increased enforcement efforts, the state Department of Transportation is posting tailgating enforcement warnings on highway overhead message boards.

Drivers in Connecticut can face a $132 fine for failing to keep a “reasonable distance” from the car in front of them.
