New Hampshire Surveys Immigrants on Workplace Safety

New Hampshire’s public health director says a new study on immigrants and workplace safety will help inform future health policies and programs.

State public health workers and the New Hampshire Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health surveyed 300 immigrants about their work experiences, including 229 who have worked in New Hampshire. Nearly two-thirds were not aware that workers’ compensation was available to cover medical costs after workplace injuries. About 10 percent said they had been injured on the job.

Dr. Jose Montero says it’s important to understand how immigrants’ experiences may be different when it comes to public health issues given the increase in immigrants to New Hampshire.
