The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is seeking more than $42,000 in penalties from the operator of six gasoline stations in western New York, saying underground gas storage tanks weren’t properly maintained.
The legal complaint was issued against United Refining Company, based in Warren, Pa., for its Kwik Fill stations in Dunkirk, Westfield, Jamestown, Fredonia and Rochester.
The complaint refers to record-keeping and maintenance of storage tanks. The company didn’t return a call seeking comment.
The EPA also announced Wednesday that it had reached an agreement with Tonawanda-based NOCO Energy Corp. to settle violations involving underground storage tanks at 13 stations in the Buffalo area and Rochester. NOCO agreed to pay a $14,000 fine and fully comply with EPA regulations.
