The comment by dot_hemath is inappropriate given the nature of this article. A human life can never be replaced, but hopefully the family has closure now. I’m not even sure I understand how this comment relates to this article.
IMHO, I find nothing humorous about this horrible, sad accident.
“It’s never about the money”, but you can bet this Costa Rican family will gladly take it. Realizing that “no amount of money will replace a life”, $28M is more than enough for these people. There was no conscious pain and suffering. Whoever thought it could be worth upwards to $500M is crazy.
Adult children living in Costa Rica, how does the death of their parent entitle them to damages? They do not live in this country nor did they live with the parnet that died.
They should have included in this story what her job and income was. That has a large bearing on the settlement. ALso, was any of the settlement for her husband?
I guess I’m an idiot and can’t read. $458 is funny. Someone didn’t check their typo. 8’s and B’s look alot alike. Thanks dot_hemath for lessoning the pain with some humor.
“Life will never be the same, but at least he can go on,” said Jeffrey Denner, one of his attorneys. Heck yeah he is going on…with a pot full of $$. I would like to see a breakdown of how much everyone got, including the attorneys!
It appears the amount of the settlement is based more on how many deep pockets there are as defendants than on how much money, security and society the deceased provided to her adult children, the first of whom, by the way, was born when the deceased was 14 years old…………
So are you implying that a woman who has a child at 14 years old deserves less of a settlement than…oh lets say a woman who has a child at 25. I don’t get your point!
This was an enormously complex project whose cost grew from original estimates as the full extent of its complexity and technical difficulty became known as the project progressed. The settlment amounts from its designers and constructors were as much a matter of expediency as of legal liability. This appears to also be the case with the settlement with the deceased victim’s family. While I am sympathetic to their loss, this is an extraordinary amount relative to typical loss of life values in other cases.

I don’t know. I think I’d find a way to come up with it. Maybe the employees could set up a lemonade stand.

There should have been more detail in the story.
