“They aren’t fabricating violations…” What world are you living in. The cops in this state have to meet ticket quotas. I have seen and been a victim of the end-of-the-month push to make the month’s nut. This BS will make it worse. The police are being charged with revenue generation – raise the money or lose your job.
“Raising the ante” Wrong! “(and generating more funds)” You managed to get 1 thing correct.
This crap got passed in total silence. It will happen again and the list of applicable violations will expand.
NO, YOU DON’T GET IT. THIS GARBAGE IS NOT THE WAY ANY GOVERNMENT SHOULD CONDUCT ITSELF. EVER READ THE DAMN CONSTITUTION?
Yeah, those damn democrats will do anything to get funding for highways, won’t they? I suppose republicans have a better ideological idea? No one, especially politicians, or at least those who want to stay in office, wants to raise taxes, because taxes are usually higher for those who have more, aren’t they? And we all know about noblese oblige, and how noble republicans are, keeping the republic in such fine shape by funding everything with borrowed money, right? I don’t care if bad drivers get penalized threefold for their behavior…someone has to actually pay money to build and maintain highways and if driving improves, as you might expect would be the consequence of such a measure, then another method of funding will have to be found….but don’t bet on it!
It isn’t the concept of increased costs imposed on repeat offenders that people are taking issue with, the issue is that it only applies if you have a Virginia address; if you’re from out of state, it doesn’t matter how many times you mistake the I95 marker for a speed limit sign.
Now, before you convice yourself that such legislation affecting out-of-state drivers would be ineffective, remember that nearly every state has a reciprocity agreement with every other, meaning the Virginia courts CAN suspend your out of state license. If you’re in the northeast and driving to Florida or the Gulf Coast for vacation or business (or vice versa) you’re going to drive through Virginia. Why penalize only the people in this state when they aren’t the only offenders? We get a LOT of traffic passing through on I81 and I95, including commercial traffic, that makes the trip regularly. Why let them off? We also have a lot coming into the state due to the number of Federal facilities, military and otherwise…why should they get a pass?
I Don’t understand why a person would not want stiff fines for reckless and drunk drivers. They are on the same roads you drive every day.One reckless driver can kill a whole family. I would like to see even harsher laws. The bottom line is If you can’t drive and not drink or can’t stay within the speed limit then you should not have a lic.
There was a little village just outside Columbus, Ohio where I used to live. They had only one source of revenue- traffic fines generated by hidden speed traps. They had more cops than residents. Eventually, legal action was taken and the village was forced to disband.
I would propose that the State of Virginia be forced to disband to that its residents and visitors can get back a little bit of our God given freedoms.
I want the freedom to drive on the roads of Virginia and be safe. If that means that drunk drivers and reckless drivers will pay a lot in fines I don’t care.If our roads will be in better shape at their cost I don’t care. Better roads and less senseless deaths. I like it!!!!

Laws are only fair when they are evenly applied.

Safety and security instead of freedom and liberty when managed by the government is very risky business.
