Whitwell won a default judgment against Smith in January after Smith failed to respond to the lawsuit.
Failed to respond…Any opinions on this move??????
As a victim of extreme childhood abuse, I can offer that sometimes the victim is reluctant to come forward out of out right \”shame\” and not wanting to face intense grilling about what happened to them. Victims often become a second accused – can face a finger wagging in their face, someone trying to say – you musta done something to provoke…
So please don\’t be too quick to judge the accuser unless you have walked a mile in his moccasins, as they say.
My memory might be subject to improvement if one of my childhood Priest suddenly inherited a bunch of money. Any care to bet this Priest inherited at least $41M? Wonder how long between the deposit and the lawsuit?
I agree with the last post. I have known several women who have not come forward with domestic abuse because of being accused of \”deserving it\” and of being ashamed. Not that domestic abuse is the same thing but these women were victims just the same.
Just how long is the Catholic church going to close their eyes to this type of abuse or try to cover it up? It has gone on too long now. And then they want to be dismissed because the guy is independently wealthy. Get real. If this truly happened, and I guess the jury believed it did, then they should pay. Any adult abusing a child is disgusting but priests should be held to a higher standard.
I am sorry for your unfortunate experience. It\’s a shame that children or anyone should be so treated.
I am opnly saying that, as you have straighforwardly reported, I would appreciate it if this accuser had simply made his accusation without a fuzzy story about forgetting 230 instances of sodomy.
You\’re way off base Cardinal Syn. This priest made his bed and now should be forced to lie in it. If up to me I think they should abolish catholisism and burn down all of their churches.
That\’s reasonable. Since many more children have been sexually molested by public school teachers than by priests, I guess that you are happy to condemn public schools to the same torch, eh?
Your comments smack of the worst type of bigotry, and lacks of any sense of understanding of human compassion. As I understand it, you have NEVER sinned, and are therefore entitled to throw the first rock. You have demonstrated a propensity NOT to forgive, and a desire to eliminate a whole body of people to appease your anger. I am so glad that your (and your opinions) are in such a small minority. P.S. Also a non-Roman Catholic and very proud to be free to make my choice of religeous expression

What about the vow of poverty?

You have any facts, figures, data, etc. to back up such a statement? No? Thought not, nice try though.
