Speed Cameras Endorsed by Nassau County Officials

April 22, 2014

Officials in Long Island’s Nassau County have formally asked for state permission to install up to 56 speed cameras in school zones.

The County Legislature unanimously supported the speed camera resolution Thursday. State lawmakers have the final say on whether to allow the devices. They would raise millions of dollars for the cash-strapped county.

Legislative leaders and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo support the idea. The state Legislature is expected to consider it later this spring.

Those caught speeding in a school zone would face $50 fines.

Neighboring Suffolk County also wants to place cameras in school zones. County officials are expected to make their formal request to the state on Tuesday.

New York City already has 20 school zone cameras and is asking to add 120 more.
