Insurance agents should be recommending to homeowners the importance of surge protectors on kitchen appliances, especially those that have electronic control panels.

Good point – I had a customer who literally had a Turkey in the oven “pop” and explode dressing out the side because of an electrical surge. There are definite safety issues.

If the subject comes up I suggest customers buy a surge protector; aren’t these guaranted to protect their stuff up to certain dollar limits?

I tell people it’s still a good idea to unplug stuff if there’s an impending lightning storm.

One alternative is recommending customers the Homeowner Equipment Breakdown policy provided by Hartfoed Steam Boiler Inspection & Insurance Co.

“Monster” covers power surges- if your equipment gets fried through the strip, they replace it. For as long as you own the strip. No dollar limit.
Of course, there are exclusions- if it’s damaged by other means, flood, etc.
Not a cheap brand, but definitely worth the price if you have even moderately high priced electronics.
