The NFL has no duty to provide 100% protection from concussions. These players knew what they were doing and assumed the risk for big money and short careers.

Jester, I agree with you to a point. They were aware of the danger of sustaining concussions, but I don’t think any of them were aware of the long term consequences.

And the NFL was? And besides, do you see any football players, now that we know, running for the gates…nope. Fact is, even if the NFL had known & shared the info, not much would’ve changed.

Fact is these guys play because the desire to play is in their bones – that’s one of the things that set them apart from other players who never go that far.

No one even looked at long term problems. Thats the issue; they knew there were short term problems and pretty much ignored those too. “man up” is what they were told. No different than soldiers forced to march through nuclear fallout in the 1950s really.

And these guys in the 1970s weren’t making the kind of huge bucks they are now.

It has become apparent that football and similar sports (not to mention boxing) leads to brain injury. Now that it is a known problem, the NFL and other organizations should become immune to suits prospectively on the basis that this is an assumption of risk by the players. However, it should probably also mean that the NFL and other organizations have obligations to protect players better in the future. My final thought is that perhaps this should be declared an ultrahazardous activity.
