As Cruise Ships Get Larger, Are They Any Safer?

These behemoths are designed to maximize profits by jamming more people onto a vessel. They’re built “up” and have become top heavy, more likely to capsize in an accident. When that occurs, 50% of available lifeboats are inaccessible. It’s been proven time and again that you cannot depend on the crew to properly supervise panic stricken mobs, and that they are inefficient and ineffective in lowering lifeboats. Colliding with immovable ojbects isn’t the only risk. You can’t dismiss collisions with other vessels, terrorism, onboard fires, and severe weather.

Monster ships have de-personalized the sailing experience. There apparently are no redundant safety procedures in place to protect against rogue egomaniacs at the helm. Cruise lines are in trouble and they know it. In the instant case, the line knew of the captain’s propensity to ignore orders. That’s actual notice of a danger. Here comes the litigation.

Airlines, trains, busses and even insurance companies try to maximize profits. No different here. What redundant safety procedures do you have in mind, Jester?

Do you think everyone just stays on deck listening to “Nearer my God, to thee”?

Here you go smart ass. Airlines file flight plans and are tracked on radar. When they go off course, air traffic controllers are alerted and immediately investigate why. The same can be done with ships. Also, why entrust 4,200 lives to one man known to be a pompous ass who disregards orders? Maybe an independent review board should certify captains annually and if they have one inkling of being irresponsible, pull their captain’s license.

Profit isn’t the devil here. This would have happened regardless of the size of the vessel. Try to address the root causes in your future comments. This deals with the human element, nothing more.

Now why didn’t you list those in the first place, Jester? You need to re-read your own comments about profits. Still have the same feeling? Oh wait, you probably do.

It is past time to notice that all of our international bodies, starting with the U.N., work so long & hard to come up with new ways to tax us, control us, regulate business, and impair our soverignty. But when it comes to protecting individual rights to protect ourselves or seek legitimate recompense, we are treated like chattel!
Now; who still thinks a New World Order / Global Government is a good idea?
