San Diego will pay $1.8 million to settle a lawsuit claiming its failure to install a traffic light caused the death of a motorcycle rider.
The San Diego Union-Tribune says the City Council approved the settlement but didn’t acknowledge any wrongdoing.
The family of 58-year-old Kenneth Sully filed a wrongful-death lawsuit after he was killed in 2009 in a collision with a car that turned left in front of him on the Pacific Coast Highway.
City Attorney Jan Goldsmith says the city failed to put in a yield or turn signal after creating a left-turn lane on the highway in 1997. Records show there were a dozen accidents at that intersection from 2006 to 2009.
A $3,000 left-turn signal was installed three months after Sully’s death.
