200 Florida Homes Still Underwater From Tropical Storm Debby

Although Florida mostly ducked any significant damage from Tropical Storm Isaac, residents in Lake City are struggling to recover after Tropical Storm Debby.

Debby caused extensive flooding, several tornadoes and high winds across much of the state in June.

In some areas of north Florida, more than 20 inches of rain was recorded.

Catholic Charities reports there are still 200 homes underwater, making it impossible for cleanup crews to access them.

There are 4,000 homes in various stages of recovery. The ground is so saturated that officials can’t pump water out. Three hundred sinkholes have subsequently opened up across the region.

Residents without flood insurance are being urged to file claims with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The deadline is Tuesday.

Victims can call FEMA at 800-621-3362.
