In order to protect homebuilders and homeowners against property damage from the growth of mold and mildew, Johns Manville is now offering formaldehyde-free MR Faced Batts.
MR Faced Batts have a facing that is treated with an EPA registered preservative – the same product used in food – to help protect it from the potential growth of mold and mildew. Fiber glass insulation is naturally mold resistant so the MR facing provides the added assurance of the product being protected from mold and mildew. MR Faced Batts reportedly helps reduce builders’ concerns over the reduction in long-term durability and odor that can result from mold and mildew growth on insulation.
According to the American Society of Home Inspectors, 38 percent of homes in the United States contain mold and mildew. Additionally, the Insurance Information Institute reports that mold-related lawsuits have increased significantly since 1999.

MR Faced Batts offer an innovative solution for our customers who want to reduce the property damage associated with mold and mildew.”
The costs associated with correcting mold issues are typically excluded from coverage under homeowners insurance, leading to increased lawsuits against homebuilders.
According to a study conducted on behalf of JM by The Farnsworth Group, 70 percent of homebuilders are concerned about mold and liability, and 82 percent indicate they would be comfortable using a product that is protected from mold and mildew growth.
