Michigan Township Fire Tax Loses Because of Tie

Opponents of a tax increase for fire services in a northern Michigan township have won – by a tie.

A recount In Elmwood Township, near Traverse City, shows 1,126 votes in favor of the millage increase and the same number opposed. The Traverse City Record-Eagle says the recount was performed Friday.

Leelanau County Clerk Michelle Crocker says a tie means the millage is defeated. The first round of counting on Nov. 4 showed a tie, too.

Township Supervisor Jack Kelly says he’s disappointed that the tax increase didn’t pass. But he says the recount result is proof that the ballot machines worked well.
