EF-1 Tornado Hits Near Indianapolis

A National Weather Service storm survey team says the tornado that hit Hendricks County apparently tossed a camper onto the roof of a home, destroying the camper and about half of the roof.

The survey team reports the damage rates the tornado an EF-1 on the Fujita scale. It says the tornado hit about 2:30 p.m. four miles northeast of Plainfield, or about 10 miles southwest of Indianapolis.

The weather service also says more than 200 cars were damaged by winds at a nearby auto auction site.

In adjacent Marion County, the weather service says winds snapped a utility pole 3 to 4 feet above ground level and left other poles leaning. It says trees also were snapped or uprooted, roofs damaged and lawn furniture strewn about.
