The Nebraska Panhandle town of Rushville is banning any new pit bulls and imposing restrictions on any current owners of the dog breed.
Mayor Chris Heiser told KQSK radio says the town is having a problem with stray dogs that may have wandered south from the nearby Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
He says pit bulls were singled out in the ordinance because of concern about the amount of damage those dogs can do with a bite.
Current pit bull owners will have to register their dogs with the city and purchase $500,000 in liability insurance to cover a possible attack.
The ordinance also requires that pit bulls be muzzled and on a leash when they aren’t confined indoors or in a locked kennel.
