A Maine sheriff’s deputy has served a one-day suspension after striking a deer with his police cruise while driving more than 90 mph.
Hancock County Deputy Christopher Sargent struck the deer just before 3 a.m. Oct. 6 while driving on Route 172 in Ellsworth. An on-board camera recorded his speed at 92 mph.
The Bangor Daily News says the accident caused $8,000 in damages, and Sargent suffered minor injuries. Hancock County commissioners voted this week to purchase a new $26,100 vehicle to replace the damaged cruiser.
Hancock County Sheriff William Clark suspended Sargent for a day without pay in late October for violating policy requiring officers to operate their cruisers “safely and properly in full compliance with all traffic laws.”
