Tennessee Houses Just Feet From Latest Rockslide

January 24, 2013

A Knoxville, Tenn., homeowner worries that the next rockslide onto the Alcoa Highway could take his house with it.

Rick Garrison told WVLT-TV he bought the house because of the view, overlooking Fort Loudoun Lake. However three rockslides in just over two years have Garrison, quite literally, living on the edge.

He worries there could be undetected cracks in the rock under his house.

Garrison and two neighbors said the state has asked them about selling their property to widen the highway, but there are no firm plans to do that yet.

Garrison said he heard a big rumble the night of Jan. 15 after heavy rain had soaked the region and learned the rocks had given way again.

One northbound lane of the highway remains closed a week later.
