Many accidents involving cranes and lifts could be avoided simply by performing an activity hazard analysis prior to starting the work. The analysis looks at the equipment, activity and process to be performed. Such an analysis would easily identify nearby wires so that supervision could take safety steps. This analysis is well-known among safety professionals. Yet, too often no hazard analysis is done prior to starting work or placing workers in danger.

I would applaud the state of Washington for using safety fines to help the families of workers killed on the job. Workers’ compensation benefits are often very limited. I wish my state of Alabama monitored safety on industrial and construction sites.
