California Man Injured in Missing Hikers Search Reaches Settlement

January 20, 2015

A volunteer who broke his back while searching for two teenage hikers lost in the Orange County, Calif., wilderness has reached a settlement.

The Los Angeles Times reports Nick Papageorge will receive $100,000 as part of a legal settlement reached this month.

Papageorge claims he fell more than 100 feet in 2013 while searching for then 18-year-old Kyndall Jack and 19-year-old Nic Cendoya, who wandered off a trail in the Cleveland National Forest. They were found dehydrated and delirious days later.

Papageorge sued Jack last year, claiming she was unprepared and had intended to take hallucinogens. Jack’s lawyer says she wasn’t on drugs.
