Water Main Break in Utah Floods Several Buildings

October 14, 2014

A water main break has caused flood damage to some three dozen structures, including a school, in Salt Lake City.

Fire department spokesman Jasen Asay says occupants of four homes were displaced after the Friday night break.

The Montessori Community School was among the inundated buildings, and a portion of Foothill Drive washed away after the 32-inch pipe broke.

About three dozen firefighters responded to the scene and worked with residents to divert water as millions of gallons poured down the street.

Asay says water to the pipe was shut off within an hour, but the pipe continued draining overnight.

Several cleanup crews assisted at homes affected by the flooding, and electricity to some homes was turned off as a precautionary measure.

The cause of the break is under investigation.
