Police said Monday they had arrested one suspect and cleared another in the armed robbery of the Bellagio hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip.
Las Vegas police say they arrested the suspect Saturday night at another casino the day after the heist about a mile away.
Officer Larry Hadfield said investigators haven’t identified him, so he’s referred to only as John Doe. He was booked into the Clark County jail on Sunday for investigation of burglary and robbery with a deadly weapon.
“They have not been able to positively identify him, but they believe the suspect they have in custody is who is responsible for the crime,” Officer Laura Meltzer told The Associated Press on Monday.
Police said a robber entered the Bellagio on Friday night, pulled a handgun and demanded money from a cashier before fleeing with an undisclosed amount.
Officers went to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino to investigate reports of a suspicious man who checked into the hotel, police said in a statement. He was later taken into custody with help from a SWAT team.
Robbery detectives initially identified another person of interest in the case and distributed his photo before saying Jesse Jones, 32, was not considered a suspect.
Meltzer said she didn’t know if detectives had actually talked to Jones before ruling him out.
“I don’t know for what reason, but they no longer believe Mr. Jones is a person of interest in this case,” she said. “There is one suspect. Nobody else has been booked in connection with this event,” she said.
The Clark County jail’s website shows the only John Doe booked on those charges Sunday was an 84-year-old man, but he does not appear that old. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.
In December 2010, another gunman left the Bellagio with more than $1.5 million in chips ranging in denominations up to $25,000. Anthony Michael Carleo, the son of a former Las Vegas judge, was later sentenced to three to 11 years in prison for the robbery.
