Disaster Declaration for Deadly Washington Landslide

April 4, 2014

President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster for damage caused by a deadly landslide in Washington state and officials say those affected should begin registering with the Federal Emergency Management Agency immediately.

The declaration makes programs available to help individuals and businesses affected by the March 22 slide that killed more than two dozen people.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said Wednesday the declaration also provides help for debris removal and emergency measures such as barricades and safety personnel. He said about 30 families need help with housing and other needs.

Inslee says the estimated financial loss to homes and contents is $10 million, with an additional estimated $32 million in emergency response and debris removal costs.
