Plaque Honoring Reno Aircraft Crash Victims Stolen

January 7, 2014

A plaque honoring 70 people who died in a Reno, Nev., aircraft crash in 1985 has been stolen at a park.

Washoe County park operations superintendent Eric Crump says the brass plaque honoring victims of the Galaxy Airlines crash was stolen at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno.

He told the Reno Gazette-Journal there’s some value in brass and the plaque might have been stolen for scrap metal.

The 2-foot-by-2-foot plaque was removed from a large rock to which it had been bolted.

Washoe County sheriff’s deputies say there are no suspects or leads.

The aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from the Reno airport on Jan. 21, 1985, killing all but one person aboard. It was returning to Minneapolis from a Super Bowl trip sponsored by Caesars Tahoe.
