Fumes Sicken 15 at Barrick Gold Mine in Nevada

July 18, 2013

Officials at Barrick Gold Corp. are trying to figure out the source of fumes or gas that sickened more than a dozen contract workers at their Goldstrike Mine in northern Nevada.

Goldstrike General Manager Andy Cole says 15 contractors working on the expansion of a processing circuit at the gold mine started reporting symptoms of nausea and headaches about 8 a.m. Monday.

Thirteen workers were taken by ambulance to Northeastern Nevada Regional Medical Center in Elko where they were treated and released Monday night.

Barrick spokesman Lou Shack tells the Elko Daily Free Press that federal safety regulators have issued an order closing access to the site and a full investigation is underway.
