Heavy Rains Flood Washington Malls

Drenching rain from a summer storm packing thunder and lightning flooded parts of two Seattle, Wash.-area malls Tuesday evening.

KOMO-TV says fire officials reported flooding at both the Westfield Southcenter Mall south of Seattle and the Bellevue Square Mall east of Seattle.

Marty Grisham of the Tukwila Fire Department tells KOMO that heavy rain overwhelmed the Southcenter Mall’s rooftop drainage system, sending water into the atrium and several stores. By late Tuesday night he said the puddled roof water had fully drained.

Bellevue Fire Lt. Troy Donlin says the rain also caused flooding in at least two separate sections of the Bellevue Square Mall. He says as many as 10 stores were affected.

In West Seattle, officials say nearly 5,000 homes and businesses temporarily lost power after the storm passed through. Seattle City Light said electricity was restored to nearly all customers by 8:15 p.m.

The National Weather Service said dozens of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes were reported.
