Payment Schedule for Wallow Fire Restitution

By FELICIA FONSECA | November 21, 2012

Two cousins who accidentally started Arizona’s largest wildfire will have to begin paying more than $3.7 million in restitution next year.

U.S. Magistrate Mark Aspey outlined the payment schedule in an order issued late Monday.

Caleb Malboeuf must make minimum payments of $500 a month. David Malboeuf initially will pay half of that amount, but the figure increases to $500 a month in January 2016.

The payments that begin on Jan. 15 are in line with what the defendants’ attorneys had suggested during a restitution hearing earlier this month.

Aspey says claims approved for those without insurance will be satisfied first.

The Malboeufs served a weekend in jail and were given community service for starting the Wallow Fire. It burned 840 square miles in Arizona and New Mexico last summer.
