Old people cherish their “independence” and will rarely accept the fact they’re unfit to drive. That decision shouldn’t be left with them. They’re incapable of making an objective call. With age comes chronic problems that can’t be compensated for with a written or driving test. Diminished vision and hearing, slower reaction time, the affects of multiiple prescription drugs, physical impairments that compromise the ability to look over their shoulders when changing lanes. They get confused and hit the wrong pedal. I think an annual, mandatory test should be required to renew a license over the age of 85. It should include a written test, a road test, and a hearing and vision test.
A hearing test is not necessary. There are deaf people who are licensed and do very well on the road. I doubt a written test would do much, but a vision test and road test seem reasonable.
