Colorado Springs to Stop Using Red-light Cameras

October 20, 2011

Colorado Springs police are planning to end a red light camera program at the end of the year because it did not meet safety expectations.

Interim Police Chief Pete Carey says the two full-time officers and a part-time supervisor assigned to the program are needed elsewhere.

According to KRDO-TV, the photo speed enforcement program will continue using a van and camera.

Carey said Tuesday the department is cutting $1.2 million because of budget cuts. He says most of the cuts will be made by eliminating open positions, reassigning officers to other duties and using more civilian officers for minor responsibilities.
