4 Injured in Explosion at Calif. Apartment Complex

October 14, 2011

Southern California authorities say four people were injured in an explosion at a Newport Beach apartment complex that triggered a fire and heavy smoke.

Newport Beach Fire Department Assistant Chief Ralph Restadius says the blaze reported shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday was quickly extinguished but about 50 residents of the Baywood Apartment complex were evacuated as a precaution.

Restadius says the cause is under investigation. He says fire officials at the scene reported a strong smell of natural gas and utilities have been shut off to the area.

Restadius says three victims suffered burns on their hands and face and were taken to a hospital. A fourth reported minor injuries.

Restadius says it is not clear if the victims are residents of the complex or employees.
